Reels and Video Slots: a Comparison
Among non players, the appearance of slot machines have changed very little, and one gets the impression that except for the outer designs, they are all the same. They are not, and if you are new to gambling, learning the difference between reel and video slots can make a difference.
Reel slots, also called mechanical slot machines, generally have three to five reels each. Although casinos incorporate their own designs and specifications for each, they operate basically the same way.
On the reels are the symbols you see on the slot, such as cherries, apples, bars, 7s etc. Of course if the slot is themed then the appropriate symbols will be there instead.
There are also an equal number of blank reels on the apparatus. Once you get the right combination, the amount you win appears on the pay line. Reel slots traditionally have only one pay line, but newer versions now have as many as five.
Although the number of pay lines varies with every casino, the general rule is that the player can only access them by playing more coins.
It can be difficult to tell the difference between reel and video slots, because the later also have reels. However, the similarity ends there, because the video slot is operated by computers, which increases the number of possible outcomes. Another difference is that in reel slots, using the maximum number of coins is a prerequisite; you cannot compete for the jackpot by playing for less.
By contrast, video slots have several more pay lines and by betting and playing more coins, the amount you can win increases. Compared with the 3 to 5 pay lines of reel slots, video slots have usually 9 or even ten.
You can bet one at a time, or simultaneously. However, from a strategic point of view, keep in mind, that the more pay lines you play in, the harder it will be to recuperate your losses. Playing in all nine, for instance, means that even if you win four, you will still be down one.
Some will place online slot machines in a different category, but they should be labeled under video slot, as they operate on the same principle (via a computer chip).
Both types have their own virtues, and you just have to try both of them out to see which suits your style. Whether you prefer reel or video slots, it is guaranteed that you will have fun with either one.
